英语在其漫长的演变和发展过程中,吸收了大量外来语的词汇,尤其是拉丁语和希腊语,衍生出无数的同义词和近义词,不仅成为世界上词汇量最丰富的语言之一,而且也成为世界上同义词、近义词最丰富多彩的语言之一。因此,学习英语同义词、近义词,辨别它们之间的细微差别,做到用词达意,准确表达思想,是掌握和应用英语的必经之路。记得有一位英国作家曾经说过:适当的地方用适当的词就是一篇好文章。这话里大概包含同义词或近义词的选择。所谓用词精当,撇开修辞因素,也同样包含同义词或近义词的选择。近年来,在各类考试中,都含有同义词、近义词的辨析内容。其实,在英语写作中,要想写好文章,也必须留心同义词、近义词的选择。许多英语学习者经常遇到或问到的问题大多是同义词方面的问题。有鉴于此,编者利用教学闲暇编写了这本词典,希望对广大英语学习者以及其他英语爱好者或从事英语教学工作者有一定的参考价值。本词典共吸收766组英语同义词和近义词,涉及词汇2741个,基本上涵盖了英语学习中经常遇到的同义词和近义词问题,以满足不同读者的需要。本书对几乎所有的同义词和近义词均提供了例句,而有些则以词组形式,既利于辨析,也为了减少篇幅。书末提供了索引,以便于读者查阅。
