读奥斯本（Thomas Mott Osborne）之《狱中七日记》（ ，New York，1914）。此君前年（一九一三）为纽约省长擢为监狱改良委员会会长，自投瓦盆省（Auburn）狱中与罪囚同居处操作饮食者凡七日，此其狱中日记也。
此君乃感情之人，英语所谓Sentimentalist是也。其所记多无病而呻之语，读之令人生一种做作不自然之感。盖以无罪之上官，自投囹圄，明知人不敢苛待，又明知七日之后可以复出，其所身受，大似戏台上人之悲欢啼笑，宜其做作不自然也（其记黑狱一节尤可笑）。
然此君有一见解，为今日监狱改良风动之一大主义，不可忽也。其见解之大旨曰：“推诚待囚，以养其自尊之心，而鼓励其自治之能力。”所谓Honor System是也。此君今为纽约省新新（Sing Sing）狱官，乃试行其平素所持见解，虽莅事未久，功效未著，而其说殊有一试之价值也。
此君所持主义之大旨，可于下所引语中微见之：
And just as it was perfectly fair to judge of the right and wrong of slavery not by any question of the fair treatment of the majority of slaves, but by the hideous possibilities which frequently became no less hideous facts, so we must recognize, in dealing with our Prison System, that many really wellmeaning men will operate a system in which the brutality of an officer goes unpunished, often in brutal manner.
The reason of this is not far to seek—a reason which also obtained in the slave system. The most common and powerful impulse that drives an ordinary, well-meaning man to brutality is fear. Raise the cry of "Fire" in a crowded place, and many an excellent person will discard in the frantic moment every vestige of civilization. —p. 135
I know this place through and through. I know these men; I've studied 'em for years. And I tell you that the big majority of these fellows in here will be square with you if you give me a chance. The trouble is, that they don't treat us on the level. ( ) —p. 155
判断奴隶制之是与非，其完全公平之方法，不应看大多数奴隶是否受到善待，而应看奴隶制所具有的那种可怕的可能性，此种可能性经常会变成骇人听闻之事实。因此，我们必须承认，判断现今监狱制度之方法，亦应如上述判断奴隶制之方法一样。许多原本心怀善意之人也在执行此监狱制度。在此种制度下，某个官员之暴行往往得不到惩罚，哪怕其施暴之方式十分残忍。
其原因不难寻找——从奴隶制里便可找到答案。要驱使一个平常的、善良的人去施暴行，最通常、最有力之推动力乃是恐惧。在一车水马龙之地，有人高喊一声“着火啦”，此时，人群躁动。在此狂乱时分，许多优秀人士也会将文明行为丢失殆尽。

此书所记瓦盆狱中生活，有可资考证者记其大略如下：
狱中凡千四百囚，为纽约省二大狱之一。
囚犯工作，日得工值一分半钱，月可得四角钱。
狱室广四尺，长七尺有半，高约七尺余。
囚有过，则罚居黑狱，自一日至数日不等。
日程：
六时半：起床。
七时：室门锁脱。囚各携便桶，列队至一所，去桶中秽物，洗净之。返室中，扫除己室。
